Guide: Create an AVI file from a film on a DVD

I thought of placing here this guide in the hope that many of you will be able to create content to share with all of us of course . Many people think that is a difficult (or even impossible) process to get an AVI file from one of the DVDs available for renting or purchasing, instead it's pretty simple, and i will try to make this as a step by step guide from the DVD to the final AVI file of the scene you want to get.

  • DVD Decrypter (development has been discontinued, but you can still get it easily on the internet, like here)
  • Auto Gordian Knot (get the latest stable release from doom9 forum)
  • DVD-Rom drive
  • 6-8 Gbyte of free space on the hard disk

Step 1: create an AVI file of the whole movie

Unfortunately, it's not possible to just capture the scene we want directly from the DVD, so you will have first to create an AVI file of the whole movie, and then cut out the part you are interested in.

  1. Start DVD Decrypter
  2. From the "Mode" menu select "IFO"
  3. Click the little "L" below the "Source", so the DVD (which of course is already in your DVD-Rom) will be loaded
  4. Now, on the "Input" section on the right, you will see a list of all the available Video Tracks on the DVD (there are different tracks for, in example, the movie, the extras, the trailers and so on). Select the one that contains the scene you want (if it's in the movie, this will usually be the one that DVD Decrypter selects by itself, the bigger one).
  5. Select a destination folder of your choice if the one already there doesn't satisfy you (be sure to have enough free space there)
  6. Click the big button to start this process. The program will play a sound and display a message when it will finish.
  7. Now that the raw content of the DVD is on your hard disk, you can now close DVD Decrypter and start Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK)
  8. First of all choose as input directory the one that you selected as output in DVD Decrypter.
  9. Then choose the position on your hard drive and the name of the AVI file that will contain the whole movie (it can even be in the same folder as the input files
  10. Choose the audio track (Better if it's English, of course!)
  11. You also have the option to select the subtitles to include (see the note at the step 14 about this).
  12. Select the output size from the predefined drop down list (i always choose 2 CDs as the quality will be great!)
  13. Click on "Advanced Settings"
  14. Make everything as in the picture shown above.
Note: If you choosed to include subtitles, remeber that they will be ON THE VIDEO! I think it's better to don't understand a word if then the subtitles have to cover what we are most interested in: the feet!
  15. Now click on "Add Job" button.
  16. Click on "Start" to begin the creation of the AVI file. Note that this will take a long time (some hours for sure) so consider doing this during the night or when you don't need to do special things with the computer (especially if you don't have a very fast one)

Step 2: exctract the scene from the AVI file of the whole movie

Auto Gordian Knot includes the tool you need for this operation (Virtual Dub), but it is not linked to any shortcut on the desktop or on the start menu. So you will have to go to My Computer and browse to the folder where you installed it (usually C:\Program Files\AutoGK ). Here you will see some folders, go inside the one called VDubMod and double click on the file VirtualDubMod.exe.

  1. From the "File" menu select "Open Video File" (first option).
  2. Select the file you just created on step 1.
  3. Using either the play button or the slider that are on the bottom of the program screen, go to the beginning of the scene you want to create the file of.
  4. From the "Edit" menu select "Set selection start".
  5. Go to the end of the scene in the same way you did in point 3.
  6. From the "Edit" menu select "Set selection end".
  7. From the "Video" menu select "Direct stream copy".
  8. From the "File" menu select "Save As", choose a name and a position for the final file and click "ok".
  9. Done! now... click here to send me the file, so that we can put it on the site to make it available to everyone!!!!
